Last week I landed an interesting massage. I got called really late to massage one of Hollywood's most talked about pop singers. Over the years I have massaged my share of celebrities, and believe me the sessions are usually interesting. But when it comes down to it, it’s all about the massage.
I treated her like anyone else. I didn't want the session to be any different than if I was massaging a nurse, a teacher or an ironworker. I believe that all people deserve massages and just because you’re a celebrity it doesn't make you any different than the next person. In fact, I believe she welcomed that I talked and treated her as if she was simply another human being in need of a healing touch.
There are some slight differences about a celebrity session over any other session. Their assistants seem to need the massage more than their client. And with many celebrities there's a security check with a personal body guard. And celebrities don't live on the same schedule as you and I, which means many sessions with celebrities end south of midnight.
But overall the session was like any massage. She was tense and stressed just like many of my clients who work 60 to 80 hours a week. Her shoulders were up to her ears, and her neck was so tight it could barely turn left or right. It took 20 minutes for her to relax, but in the end she was in a tranquil state that only a massage can create.
I’m sure if your neck and shoulders ached you wouldn't want a therapist to be gawking or timid just because you were a person of stature, fame or money. When we shed our clothes to get a massage, we almost shed our identities to our true selves. The one that just needs a massage to make us feel normal again.
